On October 10th, 2020 Luke Schmits dropped his Lowe aluminum boat, cranked the 50 HP Evinrude, and headed to his fishing spot.  He began fishing shortly after 7:00 am and at around 7:30 he got a hit on his flat sided crankbait.

What happened next will probably be replayed in his head for the rest of his life.  He caught  the biggest smallmouth in the biggest tournament of his young life.

He brought the fish in to weigh in the first weigh in hour.  It was the first fish to cross the scales of the event.

That smallmouth weighed in at 4.90 lbs.  He won the hour and received a $500 check for that first place hourly prize from that point on it was a waiting game.  He returned to fishing but never did get another big bite to weigh again.  He had to wait it out until the end.  As he watched in the last hour as fish after fish came to the scales but he remained on top.  The it happened a fish was brought to the scale that looked like it was large enough to surpass his weight.  That fish weighed in by Kendall Robinson became the 2nd largest bass to be weighed all weekend when it topped the scales at 4.71 lbs.  Leaving Luke to the number 1 spot. .

In the new age of $80,000.00 to $100,000.00 bass boats Luke has proved that it doesn't take a 4th mortage to compete and win, it doesn't take $15,000.00 worth of electronics.  It only takes the desire to fish and one cast.  Congrats Luke!  We look forward to seeing you next year.
